Probably the most famous ship still sailing on the great lakes today passes floats down bound in the Detroit River past one of the most historic buildings in Detroit. The Michigan Central train station stands tall and proud as it undergoes refurbishment. Its always nice framing these amazing pilot house forward vessels with that amazing building.

In perfect side morning light, the CSL Tadoussac, one of only a few pilot house forward vessels owned by CSL, floats down bound in the St. Clair River, framed by the power plant in East China Michigan.

These 'foreign' ships are interesting to me - while not a classic lakeboat - they often have interesting liveries. Now, I'm not sure how foreign this thing really is because it appears to be owned/operated by a Canadian forest company! She's heading back to Montreal and should be there around May 2'nd. I photographed it upbound at Sarnia/Port Huron. I'm glad shipping season is back in action - it was a very productive visit to Sarnia over easter weekend. Details on Wigeon (in Metric) note the flag noted on the canfor website differs from AIS. http://www.canfornav.com/en/mv-wigeon.aspx Is this a foreign (salty) or is this a retrofit now captive in the great lakes area? Seems to be 'lakes fitted' per above website??

After being idle since January of 2015 the CSL Tadoussac has finally made it back into service. A labour dispute put back to the wall for 6 days however as she is seen here will a full load of taconite in the North Slip at Point Edward, ON.

On a bitter winter day, the Saginaw is the first of 3 upbound classic lakers being escorted by the icebreaker Samuel Risley (out of the frame). The Saginaw destined for Sault Ste. Marie, is followed by the Algomarine for Goderich and the CSL Tadoussac bound for Thunder Bay.

Ahh, the crown jewel of the great lakes freight fleet in 2017, the Alpena, about to turn between Buoys 1 and 2. What's great about Sarnia is as the ships arrive, you'll have a chance to shoot both sides and often in great light as they turn quite a bit; and my 400mm lens got a good workout! I'm glad to have finally got a steamship on camera, in my years passed I don't think I managed to photograph one. A great looking ship, well maintained, as Neil Young would sing, long may she run.

From the archives 30 years ago today we have the Canadoc(2) and Algogulf(1) laid up in the north slip at Point Edward, ON. The Canadoc was scrapped in Colombia in 1991 while the Algogulf sails today as the Algosteel.
